The short answer
Grasscloth is woven natural fiber on a paper backing, and it shows seams and color variation by nature. We install it in Belle Isle homes with careful planning of strip order, a tinted primer and attention to indoor humidity near the lakes.
Owners in Belle Isle often ask for grasscloth when they want a room to feel quieter and more textured without adding pattern. It pairs naturally with wood floors, rattan furniture and views of the water, and it softens the hard lines of a block ranch or a crisp newer build. It is also one of the more demanding wallcoverings to hang. We are based about 2 miles west in Orlando, so getting to your home is easy, and this page focuses on the questions that come up most with natural fiber: seams, color variation, moisture and where it simply should not go.
Setting expectations before you buy
Grasscloth is handmade in many cases, and no two rolls are identical. Some weaves are tight and uniform, others loose with slubs and knots. Every seam will be visible, because there is no printed motif to disguise it. People who love grasscloth appreciate these qualities; people expecting a perfectly uniform surface are sometimes surprised.
We bring this up early so you can choose a weave you will be happy with. Tighter sisal and paperweave products show less variation. Seagrass and arrowroot have more character and more visible change from strip to strip. Seeing a large sample, not just a small swatch, on your actual wall is the best way to decide.
How we lay out the strips
Our first step on site is unrolling everything. We cut lengths, number them and compare them side by side in natural light. Strips are arranged so color shifts gradually, and any with a noticeably different tone are reserved for short pieces above doors or below windows. Where the manufacturer specifies it, we hang alternate strips reversed to balance edge-to-edge shading.
Seams are positioned with the room in mind. We avoid placing a joint right in the middle of a wall behind a headboard or centered over a console, and we try to make strips equal in width at the corners so the rhythm stays consistent.
- All rolls checked for matching run numbers
- Strips numbered and sequenced before pasting
- Short, off-tone pieces placed in low-visibility spots
- Reverse hanging only when the product calls for it
Primer color and wall condition
Loose weaves allow small amounts of the wall color to show between fibers. A white wall behind a dark grasscloth can create a speckled, lighter look. We use a pigmented primer close to the grasscloth's background color so the wall disappears behind the fiber.
In older Belle Isle homes with plaster walls, we fix cracks and loose areas first. Grasscloth is thick enough to hide minor texture, but it will not bridge a crack that moves with the house. On newer drywall, we check for nail pops and seam ridges and smooth them before priming.
Lake air and natural fiber
Homes close to the water and those with pool enclosures tend to see more humidity indoors. Summers bring hot, humid days and near-daily afternoon storms from June through September, while winters are mild and drier. Natural fiber responds to both: it can relax in damp air and tighten when the house dries out. Rapid swings encourage edges to lift.
The fix is steady conditions. Keep the air conditioning on, consider a dehumidifier if a room feels sticky, and avoid installing grasscloth on walls that share space with a shower or a door that is constantly open to the deck.
Where we recommend something else
Grasscloth stains with water, absorbs odors and is difficult to clean, so we suggest skipping it in kitchens, full bathrooms, laundry rooms and mudroom areas. Homes with cats that scratch or toddlers with crayons may want a vinyl wallcovering that imitates woven texture instead. These faux grasscloths have improved a lot and offer a similar look with a wipeable surface.
For bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, offices and even ceilings in well-conditioned spaces, real grasscloth is an excellent choice.
