The short answer
We install wallpaper in full rooms throughout Eatonville, including older block homes with plaster walls and renovated houses with new drywall. Good prep, the right primer, a planned layout and humidity awareness keep the results tight and lasting.
Wallpapering a whole room is a bigger commitment than a single feature wall, and in Eatonville it usually means working with surfaces that have some history. Many houses in this small town, about 11 miles north of our Orlando base, are single-story concrete block homes with plaster or older drywall interiors, layers of paint and sometimes a forgotten coat of wallpaper underneath. Others have been renovated with new drywall and updated kitchens and baths. We hang wallpaper in both, and the difference between a room that looks professionally done and one that does not usually comes down to what happens before the first strip goes up. This page explains our approach room by room.
Room-by-room product advice
Every room has its own demands. Kitchens see grease and splashes, so solid vinyl or a vinyl-coated paper that wipes clean is the practical pick. Bathrooms with showers need a moisture-resistant product and a working exhaust fan. Powder rooms without showers can handle almost anything and are a great spot for a bold print.
Bedrooms, living rooms and dining rooms are where traditional papers, nonwovens and textured wallcoverings shine. Hallways that get bumped by laundry baskets and vacuums do better with a scrubbable surface. We help match the product to the room so it keeps looking good.
- Kitchen: solid vinyl or vinyl-coated paper
- Full bath: moisture-resistant vinyl, good ventilation
- Powder room: bold prints and specialty finishes
- Bedroom and living room: nonwoven or traditional paper
- Hallway: scrubbable, durable surface
Preparing walls in older homes
Older interiors often carry several decades of paint. Glossy enamel from earlier eras can resist paste, so we scuff it or use a bonding primer. Peeling paint is scraped back to a firm edge and feathered with patching compound. Hairline cracks in plaster over block are filled and sealed.
We also tap and inspect for old wallpaper painted over. It is common in homes of this age, and new paste can loosen it, causing bubbles in the new paper. When we find it, we recommend removing it first. The extra step pays off in a wall that stays smooth for years.
Finally, every surface receives a wallcovering primer. It evens out porosity, helps the paste grab and makes future removal much easier.
Layout and hanging
Patterned paper needs a plan. We identify the focal wall, often the one facing the entry or behind the main furniture, and center the pattern there. Because every room ends with one seam where the pattern cannot match perfectly, we place that spot in the least visible corner, often behind the door.
Older homes rarely have perfectly plumb corners, so we draw our own vertical reference line for each wall. Strips are cut with the pattern repeat in mind, pasted and booked or hung paste-the-wall style depending on the product, then matched and smoothed. We wipe each seam clean and trim at the ceiling and base with a fresh blade.
Cover plates go back on with the pattern carried across where practical, and we walk the room with you at the end.
Weather and indoor humidity
From June through September, Central Florida days are hot and humid, with afternoon storms almost daily. Winters are mild and much drier. That seasonal swing affects paper, paste and walls. We bring rolls into the conditioned house ahead of time and keep the air conditioning running during installation.
Older block homes can be a bit leakier to outside air than new construction, so we recommend keeping the thermostat steady rather than switching it off during the days the paste is curing. If you are away during hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30, setting the system to hold a moderate temperature helps protect your walls.
Before we arrive
Move small items and breakables out of the room and pull furniture away from the walls if possible. Make sure all of your rolls share the same batch number, and keep one label in a safe place. If there are wall-mounted TVs or shelving, let us know so we can plan around them.
