The short answer
We install wallpaper throughout Winter Garden, in older block ranch homes and newer subdivisions. Prep is matched to your walls, paper is chosen for the room's use, and the pattern is planned before cutting.
Winter Garden is a city of contrasts when it comes to houses. Near the older core you find concrete-block ranch homes from the middle of the last century, with plaster-smooth or lightly textured walls and rooms that have been repainted many times. Farther out, newer subdivisions are full of two-story stucco homes with builder drywall, high ceilings and open kitchens. Each kind of house asks something different of a paperhanger. Specialist Wallpaper Installer works out of Orlando, roughly 14 miles southeast, and we hang every type of wallcovering here, adjusting prep and technique to the walls in front of us.
Two kinds of houses, two kinds of prep
In the older block homes, interior walls on the outside of the house are often finished directly over masonry or furring strips. Decades of paint can hide old patches, flaking layers or even previous wallpaper. We test for loose paint, scrape and sand where needed, and seal everything before hanging so new paste does not pull up old coatings.
In newer homes, the challenges are different: builder flat paint that absorbs paste unevenly, light orange-peel texture, and nail pops or corner cracks as the framing settles in its first years. We repair those spots, knock down texture where it would show through, and prime with a wallcovering primer. In both cases, prep usually takes more of the visit than people expect, and it is the part that decides how the paper looks a few summers from now.
Matching the paper to the room
The material should suit how a room is used. Winter Garden kitchens, laundry rooms and kids' baths see splashes, steam and fingerprints, while a formal living room may barely be touched. Here is how we usually guide the choice:
- Solid vinyl or vinyl-coated papers for bathrooms, laundry rooms and kitchens
- Non-woven papers for bedrooms and living areas, since they hang dimensionally stable and strip off cleanly later
- Traditional pulp or printed papers for low-traffic rooms where a classic look matters
- Textured, flocked or metallic finishes for powder rooms and accent areas
- Natural fibers like grasscloth only for dry rooms out of direct sun
Getting the pattern math right
Every pattern has a repeat, the distance before the design starts over, and a match type: straight, half-drop or random. A large half-drop on tall walls can use far more material than the same square footage in a plain texture. We measure each wall, account for doors and windows, and calculate how many usable strips each roll provides. The roll count we give you includes a reasonable allowance for matching and trimming.
Ordering everything at once matters. Wallpaper is printed in batches, and a roll from a later run can be a shade off. If you love a paper, buy enough for the room now plus a spare roll for future repairs.
A typical installation day
Here is roughly how a room comes together once your paper has arrived:
- We protect floors and move light furniture away from the walls
- Switch plates and outlet covers are removed and power to wet areas is switched off
- Repairs and primer are completed and allowed to dry
- A plumb line is set, often starting at the least visible corner
- Strips are cut in order, pasted and hung with the pattern matched at eye level
- Edges are trimmed at the ceiling and baseboard, and paste is cleaned from the surface
- Covers go back on and we review the finished walls with you
Florida weather and fresh wallpaper
Summers here are hot and humid, with storms nearly every afternoon from June through September. Inside an air-conditioned house, a well-hung paper does not mind. Trouble starts when a house sits closed with the AC off, or when a room has a leak nobody has noticed. If you see a stain or a soft spot near a window, mention it before installation so the source can be fixed first.
During hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30, a long power outage can leave walls damp for a few days. If one hits right before your appointment, we reschedule rather than paper over walls that have not dried. We also work in Windermere, Ocoee, Bay Lake, Lake Buena Vista and Eatonville.
